Transitional Horizons: Moments Between Day, Night, and Self

The Sanchez Art Center’s 50|50 Annual Juried Exhibition

We are drawn to sunrises and sunsets not only for their beauty, but for what these transitional moments reflect emotionally and symbolize personally. Transitional Horizons: Moments Between Day, Night, and Self is a series of 50 oil paintings exploring the transformative space between day and night, presence and absence of light. Inspired by photographs spanning from 2018 to 2025 from my travels along the coasts of California, Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Maine, these works capture liminal moments where light shifts, boundaries blur, and perception bends.

Sunrises and sunsets are consistent markers of time, yet their expressions vary from place to place, day to day, and moment to moment. Each painting treats the horizon as a moving threshold, reflecting transition as both a physical phenomenon and a metaphor for personal change. Transitional Horizons invites contemplation of what it means to exist in-between places, identities, and states of awareness. The theme is not just about watching the sky change, but about witnessing how we change with it. These moments are fleeting, yet they repeat daily, marking quiet, cyclical transformations of self and environment.

My work explores how environment shapes identity, memory, and resilience. Painting allows me to explore the forms and rhythms of our surroundings as we pass through cycles of our lives. I ground viewers in an environment and invite them to look closely, engaging with the vibrancy and dynamism while inspiring a deeper connection to place. My artworks are reflective pieces that inspire personal reflection and inventory about how our environment shapes us and how we shape our environment.
